Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or ADD) is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder. It’s symptoms include impulsive behavior, inability to concentrate well, hyper-activity, difficulty in learning, and poor social skills. Some of these “signs” are considered normal in young children so keep this in mind if your child’s teacher or physician has labeled your kid with this disorder; especially in young boys. Remember, we live in a prescription crazed society now-a-days. Some people think there is an agenda with the pharmaceutical industry, like Michale Moore in his documentary Sicko, for example. Statistics, however, show that 25 – 35 percent of children with this disorder have learning disabilities. They also show that millions of kids are on Ritalin prescriptions. Medication is necessary in some cases, but precaution should be used as the long term effects are not fully understood yet. It has also been reported that various ADHD medicines can lead to emotional disorders in the long term.
Diet is often connected to attention problems and hyperactivity; this is especially the case with sugar; preservatives, additives, and a diet with too much fast or processed foods are also contributing factors. Buying and preparing fresh food is your best bet here. Remember, our bodies are natural organisms and our brains by chemical reactions. To illustrate this, consider that when an alcoholic comes into a recovery room for the first time, he or she is given a cup of coffee with a lot of sugar in it to calm them down. This is because sugar reacts in our blood system the same way alcohol does. In fact, alcohol is made with equal portions of sugar and yeast. Too much sugar can also trigger anger and fear related problems as it sometimes activates the adrenal glands; the fight or flight chemical that naturally resides in our bodies, for example.
Other contributing causes are environmental pollutants and heavy metal toxicity which can lead to upsetting the brain chemistry. Also, a lack of proper essential fatty acids and certain vitamins and minerals, especially B’s, magnesium, and iron; again, nutritional deficiencies.
